Popular Styles of Yoga

As you begin your Yoga training, you should be aware that there are many styles of Yoga available, and it is imperative that you go for the one that suits your individual capabilities and preferences.

The great difference between various styles of Yoga are mainly about emphasis. This may concern such things as how to coordinate one’s movements and breaths, concentrating on aligning one’s body strictly, and maintaining different postures. Despite the variety, all the different styles have a common lineage.

While there are many yoga styles, we’ll look at just a couple, both of which were founded by students of a famous Yoga teacher known as Krishnamachar ya.

Ashtanga Yoga:

This style of Yoga was started by Pattabhi Jois. It is quite demanding physically and is suitable for those in need of a serious workout. In this type of Yoga, there are a series of flows through which people have to move. In order to develop strength, participants jump from one posture to another. This also improves both stamina and flexibility. The Ashtanga style of Yoga is not for you if you are just starting out.

Iyengar Yoga:

The Iyengar style of Yoga was developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, one of the most popular teachers. Iyengar will make you realize that there is a great deal involved in the simple process of standing. There is a lot of concentration and subtle movements as participants endeavor to get postures that are precisely aligned, requiring minute attention to detail. In order for a teacher to be certified, he must have trained rigorously for between two and five years.
